When you’re upset, how do you process your feelings?

Many pet parents are attuned to their four-legged friend’s feelings. They can inform you whether their dog is feeling happy or feeling down. But there’s often debate on the following: Do dogs cry like humans? Does your dog actually release tears from his eyes when he feels upset?

While many people believe that tears shed from their dogs’ eyes are a reaction to an emotion they’re feeling, it’s more likely not the case. Dogs might have moist eyes at times that the pet parent reports the dog is feeling depressed, but those tears can often be attributed to a different reason than depression.

What are common reasons for dog tears?

There are many reasons why dogs may expel tears from their eyes. Some dog breeds with more prominent eyes experience tears more frequently than other breeds, as their eyes are regularly exposed to outside sources. Occasionally, a dog’s eyes release tears because of allergies. Another reason could be if there is a mild irritant in your dog’s eye.

In the more severe situations, dogs may have experienced a scratched cornea. In this circumstance, we recommend seeing your veterinarian immediately for treatment. At the same time, we recommend contacting your pet’s vet if your dog is experiencing colored discharge, mucus, or blood. Also, if your pooch’s eyes are swollen, please inform the veterinarian.

How do dogs show their emotion?

Dogs may show their emotions in other ways, such as whining when impatient for a treat or in desperate need of a bathroom. They might bark when guarding territory or if ready to attack. Just because your dog does not cry tears from his or her tear ducts doesn’t mean your four-legged friend doesn’t have emotions!
