One thing I love about my job is getting to work around creative people. I consider myself the inspiration for most of this creative work, so it is great to interview another office dog in my line of work. Quincy is the inspiration behind author Karen White, and quite a busy office dog. I’m glad our humans were able to coordinate our schedules!
Napa: Tell me more about working at as a writer with your human mom, author Karen White.
Quincy: Do you have a few days? My mom, Karen White (also known as “The Queen of Southern Fiction”) is a writer of Southern (women’s) fiction. A New York Times Best Selling author I might proudly add!
I am her writing companion. She writes at least two books a year, plus goes on book tours, so she is a very busy woman with a demanding schedule. She depends on me to help her write chapters, alert her when the UPS man is in the vicinity, and sometimes I accompany her on book tours.
We work out of the house so we are BFFs. It’s important that I stay very close to her at all times. I help her stay calm and focused and therefore able to produce outstanding work. While I say this humbly, I am ‘the secret sauce’ of her success.
Napa: What is a typical day like in the office?
Quincy: We are up early for breakfast, then outside, then it’s time for a nap while my mom writes. Then mom eats a light lunch (she watches her figure carefully you know!), the UPS man generally arrives around this time, so I must vigorously bark and defend our homestead. Then I take a little afternoon nap while she writes. Then it’s time for dad to come home, dinner time, and outside and rest before bedtime! I do however have a new puppy in the house, Sophie Belle, who is really wreaking havoc on my standard workday schedule.
Napa: Whose desk do you sit under most often?
Quincy: Actually I must be in direct contact with my human at all times. I prefer to sit in the chair with her so that she can channel my positive energy.
Napa: When you get bored around the office (in between important in the office tasks), how do you keep busy?
Quincy: I have a doggie door, some sometimes I’ll let myself out for a little run around the yard. It helps me maintain my youthful figure underneath the fluff.
Napa: What’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten around the office (even if you weren’t supposed to)?
Quincy: I’m prone to nosh on toilet paper on occasion.

Napa: Where are you from? What’s your favorite trait about the area you live in?
Quincy: As a Havanese, my native homeland is Cuba. So I’m of Latin descent, but reside in north metro Atlanta, in the burbs. So I’m a suburban dweller.
Napa: If you could tell your human co-workers anything, what would it be?
Quincy: Nap more, stress less.
Napa: Can you share any advice for other office dogs?
Quincy: Don’t ever underestimate the value of your contribution to your human and the workplace. Your job is to bring comfort, inspiration and fun to the job! Your very presence brings peace and love. Don’t be afraid to add a little drama with an occasional outburst of barking. It helps the humans stay awake.
Napa: Your mom has published so many great books. How many of those have you assisted with?
Quincy: You ask some tough questions my friend! She’s written 19 books, so I’d estimate that I’ve been alive, by her side, and helping contribute to more than half of these, probably more!
Napa: What’s it like to be a dog who helps write books? Any advice to other dogs who have a lot to say?
Quincy: First of all, it’s not a life that’s all glamour. There is A LOT of hard work involved! We work long days and weekends. Regarding advice for dogs who have a lot to say, make sure your human is aware of your aspirations. I highly recommend social media to build your presence and hopefully work up to a book deal, which is the ultimate goal!
